
It was high time to take this photograph of the old blast furnaces with their wonderful filigree charging-hoists. Once, at least half a dozen of blast furnaces produced raw iron here. The remaining 'monument', the fallen stack of a blast furnace, does not convey anything of the past.

Pittsburgh once was the centre of American steel industry. Only a small number of relicts has been preserved, and the steelmill shown here was in the course of demolition too.
